Identify the exact card before the format
Start with the name, printing, and stamp. Distinguish an existing card reprinted in MBC from a new card, a playtest card, or an acorn card. Then record the format you want to play. A product name on a seller’s listing is not enough to answer a legality question. Keeping these fields together in a deck checklist makes it easier to identify why a card passed one check but failed another, especially when your collection mixes ordinary printings and unusual treatments.
Eligibility still needs a banned-list check
A set’s format eligibility does not override a banned list. Once you know a card’s category and applicable date, check the current list for your target format. For Commander, also check your commander’s color identity, singleton restrictions, deck size, and any explicit card exception. Modern, Pioneer, and Standard do not gain every new MBC card simply because the card is printed on paper. A reprint can be usable in a format because of an earlier eligible release, so investigate the card’s history instead of treating every MBC inclusion alike.
Casual agreement and organized play
A group may discuss unusual cards before a casual game, but an agreement at one table does not establish official Constructed eligibility. Tell the organizer exactly which card and version you intend to use when an event has additional requirements. Save a link to the relevant official rules or list alongside the deck. This guide is a dated research snapshot, so a future ban, unban, or rules revision needs a fresh check rather than an assumption that the page tracks every change automatically.
Save the outcome of the check
Record the format, check date, card category, applicable milestone, and banned-list result. If a deck checker disagrees, compare those fields before changing the deck. This helps distinguish a stale database from an actual restriction on your chosen card.
New cards, reprints, playtests and acorns
A legality check has to distinguish four cases. New MBC cards follow the announced new-card milestones. Existing reprints retain their established format eligibility, subject to bans. Playtest cards are outside normal Constructed legality, and acorn cards are also excluded from Constructed. Do not collapse these cases into a sentence saying that every card in the box is Commander-legal. The physical product combines cards meant for different play contexts. Collector numbers and stamps help identify the category, but your final decision still requires the actual card, target format and applicable date.
The dated answer for each format
The updated product article sets November 13, 2026 for new-card Commander legality and January 1, 2027 for Legacy, Vintage and other Eternal formats. At the October 22 research date, those milestones have not arrived. The earlier release-notes legality paragraph should be read with that update. Printing a new MBC card does not add it to Standard, Pioneer or Modern. By contrast, an existing reprint may already belong to one of those formats through an earlier eligible set. Check the underlying card’s history rather than treating the MBC expansion label as the only evidence.
Rulebreaker is a deckbuilding exception with limits
Rule 903.5e allows the designated commander’s Rulebreaker ability to function before the game. It does not make an otherwise banned card legal, convert a playtest card into an ordinary Constructed card, or remove unrelated deck restrictions. For Tolabow, read the revised Oracle wording rather than the older printed description. For another commander, read its own exception from the beginning. Do not assume that an example involving one commander transfers to another with the same ability word. This separates a legal card in the format from a card that is legal in your particular deck.
Work through a disputed card in order
First, identify whether the physical card is a normal reprint, new card, playtest or acorn version. Second, select the exact format and date. Third, check the current banned or restricted list. Fourth, apply your commander’s color identity and explicit deckbuilding permissions. Finally, check any event-specific requirements with the organizer. If a deck-building website disagrees with the official references, compare the category and dates it is using before assuming a rules exception. Save the result with the deck so a future review starts with the evidence rather than a remembered yes-or-no answer.
